Chapter 3: Ghost Town in California Called Bodie. The Forbidden Haunts: A Dare into the Darkness – Paranormal Adventure Thriller Web Novel.
The landing gear of the airplane touched down on the tarmac of Texas Airport with a gentle thud, and Alan felt a surge of relief wash over him. He glanced at Adib, who was grinning from ear to ear, excitement radiating off him as they gathered their belongings.
“We made it, buddy!” Adib exclaimed, giving Alan a playful punch on the arm.
“Yeah, and just in time for the adventure to begin,” Alan replied, trying to match Adib's enthusiasm, though he felt a lingering weight in his chest.
“First semester classes start tomorrow, then the part-time job,” Adib reminded him as they walked toward baggage claim. “Got to get settled before we can get adventurous.”
“Right,” Alan said, nodding, though a part of him yearned for adventure more than responsibilities. “Let’s just get through this first week.”
After sorting out their luggage, they made their way to the campus. The atmosphere was alive with students rushing from one building to another, and laughter filling the air. Alan took a deep breath, trying to immerse himself in the new surroundings.
The next day unfolded with a mix of anticipation and nerves. They attended their university classes, Alan eager to learn but constantly glancing at his phone, wondering about Ava. After classes, he headed to his part-time job at a local café, where he expertly brewed coffee and greeted customers, yet his thoughts kept drifting back to her.
Finally, after a long day, he found a moment of quiet. Sitting in his small apartment, he took a deep breath and dialed Ava’s number. His heart raced as the phone rang, each beep mirroring his mounting anxiety.
“Hey, Alan!” Ava’s familiar voice broke through the line, instantly warming his heart.
“Hey, Ava,” he replied, trying to sound casual despite the feelings bubbling inside him. He leaned back on the couch, staring at the ceiling as he gathered his thoughts.
“I’ve missed you so much,” Ava said, and Alan could hear the sincerity in her tone. “How’s Texas treating you?”
“It’s… different. Exciting, I guess.” Alan paused, feeling the words he wanted to say crystallize at the tip of his tongue, but fear held them hostage. “I wish you were here.”
“Really? You’re not just saying that?” Ava asked a hint of disbelief in her voice.
“No, I mean it. It feels like something’s missing without you,” Alan confessed, his voice growing quieter.
Ava was silent for a moment, and Alan could feel the distance stretching between them, heavy and palpable. “I miss you too. It’s hard to be apart after everything we’ve been through.”
“Yeah…” Alan hesitated, grappling with his emotions. “Ava, I’ve been thinking… about us. I—”
“I think about us too,” she interrupted gently. “But with finals coming up, I don’t know if I can…”
“I understand,” Alan interrupted back, heart sinking. “I just… I want you to know that I—”
Before he could finish, Ava spoke over him again, his voice tinged with uncertainty. “Alan, I need to focus on University right now. But I care about you—more than you know.”
“More than I know…” he echoed softly, the words feeling both hopeful and disheartening. “I don’t want to rush anything, but I do want to invite you down here sometime. It would be great to explore Texas together.”
“Texas sounds… amazing,” she replied, but he could hear the hesitation in her voice. “But I’m swamped with studies. Finals are right around the corner.”
“Yeah, and I get that. I just… I wish I could tell you how I feel,” he admitted, frustration seeping into his voice.
“I know. But we’ll figure this out. It’s just a matter of time,” Ava reassured him.
“Right,” Alan said, feeling a bittersweet mix of longing and understanding. After a moment, he added, “Take care of yourself, Ava. I’ll be here when you’re ready.”
“Always,” Ava replied, and they exchanged quiet, comfortable goodbyes before hanging up. Alan put his phone down, feeling the shadows of their conversation linger throughout his apartment.
Later that night, as they both settled in for the evening, Adib couldn’t help but notice Alan’s pensive mood. “You alright, man?” he asked, plopping down onto the couch beside him.
“Just thinking about Ava,” Alan replied, rubbing the back of his neck, trying to shake off the lingering sadness.
“Ah, the love life dilemma,” Adib teased, pulling a playful face. “What’s the latest, Romeo?”
Alan chuckled wryly, “It’s complicated. She misses me, but she’s overwhelmed with school stuff. I invited her down, but who knows if she’ll come?”
Adib leaned in, an excited glint in his eye. “You know what we should do? We should explore some haunted places around here. There’s this ghost town in California called Bodie. Legend has it that it was a booming gold-mining town in the 1870s until it was abandoned. Nowadays, it’s a State Historic Park, and they say it’s filled with supernatural activity.”
Alan raised an eyebrow, intrigued but also wary. “Haunted?”
“Yeah! They have reports of ghost sightings and weird sounds coming from the old bars. Plus, there's a legend that if you take anything from there—like a rock—you’ll be cursed with bad luck and health problems!” Adib explained animatedly.
“Sounds like a blast…” Alan said, trying to stifle his apprehension. “But what about our classes and my job?”
“True, it’s not like we can just hop on a plane to California. It’d be a long drive.” Adib nodded, deep in thought. “But we can plan for a weekend after your classes settle down—or even after Ava's finals. It could be a fun escape for all three of us.”
“Sounds like a plan,” Alan said, feeling a spark of excitement through the fog of his worries. “Let’s keep that in mind.”
“Absolutely! Ghost hunting and a road trip to clear your head sounds like the perfect remedy,” Adib said, nudging Alan playfully.
As they talked, Alan felt the conflicting emotions settle a little. Maybe, just maybe, there was a way to weave together their academic responsibilities, their adventures, and the budding relationships in their lives. The thought of future escapades, haunted or not, rekindled hope in his heart—even as the shadows of uncertainty lingered just out of reach.
