Chapter 9: The Door the Reader Chose. The Horror Thriller Web Novel 'It’s Me, Mom—Let Me In' by Abrar Nayeem Chowdhury.
The parchment pulsed.
That phrase — that cursed, shimmering phrase — still hovered in the air like a bloodstain on silence:
“The reader decides.”
No one moved.
Because the Book was no longer telling the story.
Someone else was.
And it wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Debra.
It wasn’t even Stuart.
It was you.
A flicker.
The bracket-door rippled like water.
From its center came a hand, human-looking. Pale.
But made of paper cuts and ink-stained nails.
The hand pointed.
Not at Daniel.
Not at Debra.
Not even at Stuart.
It pointed up.
There, suspended above the characters, was a single line of text:
“You have been watching too long. Step forward.”
The Book had stopped being a story.
It had become a summoning.
Not for a demon.
Not for a ghost.
But for a reader who had gone too deep.
Someone who knew the names.
Someone who kept turning the pages long after the ink began to rot.
And now?
The Book had decided to write you.
Debra screamed.
Not out of fear, but defiance.
“No more readers! No more writers! I want out!”
But the ground opened anyway.
A massive table of contents rose beneath them like a funeral altar. Each of their names was carved in:
Debra Langley
Daniel Langley
Inspector Stuart
[REDACTED]
That last one?
It wasn’t redacted by the Book.
It was redacted because it hadn’t been revealed… yet.
Then came the twist.
The sentence that appeared above their heads in real time:
“Only the reader who knows their own forgotten name may finish the story.”
And with that, everything collapsed.
Debra vanished first.
Not screamed, not died.
Just — edited out.
Her outline became a dashed line, like a drawing left unfinished by a dying hand.
Daniel was next.
He didn’t resist.
He only whispered:
“We were only ever mirrors. Now the reader has to look in.”
And then he was gone.
Stuart remained.
But only for a moment.
Just long enough to say:
“If you’re still here, Reader... it means you chose yourself.”
Then, he stepped through the bracket door —
And everything in the Book turned white.
