Squid Game Season 2 Sets Global Records for Netflix

Netflix's highly anticipated second season of the hit South Korean survival drama "Squid Game" has shattered global viewership records, further cementing the show's status as a cultural phenomenon.


According to data from Nielsen Media Research, which measures viewing habits across platforms, "Squid Game: Season 2" has reached an estimated 1.3 billion hours viewed globally on the Netflix platform in its first four weeks. This impressive metric makes it the most-watched English-language TV show in Netflix history, surpassing even the success of other highly popular titles such as "Stranger Things" and "Bridgerton."


The record-breaking viewership numbers were fueled in part by the show's massive popularity in South Korea, where it drew in an estimated 240 million hours viewed in the country alone. The show's global appeal, however, was undeniable, with strong viewership numbers also reported in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and India.


Nielsen's data also revealed that "Squid Game: Season 2" drew an estimated 100 million viewers on a single day, setting a new benchmark for English-language TV shows on the platform. The show's widespread popularity has also translated to a significant increase in engagement, with fans flocking to social media platforms to discuss the show's complex plot twists and character developments.


The success of "Squid Game: Season 2" comes as a vindication of Netflix's strategy to invest in local content and partner with international talent. The show was created by South Korean writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who drew inspiration from his own childhood and social class struggles in the creation of the series.
